In the uncertain days of the German post-war era, in 1948 Rolf Hein, a doctor of chemistry, began experimenting with detergents as a means of exchanging food with local farmers in the rural areas surrounding the native town of Pustefix in Tübingen, and in doing so, discovered by chance a formula that was excellent for making soap bubbles.
