Child Development Guide from 0 to 6 years. 2/6

Developmental Guide for Boys and Girls from 6 to 12 Months:

Between the sixth and eighth month, babies are able to sit upright without support, crawl, and grasp any object within their reach. Their first incisors begin to erupt around six months, indicating that they will soon be able to bite and chew soft foods.

Little and curious explorers

After eight months, babies are skilled and fast crawlers. They can now pull themselves up by holding onto furniture and crawl up and down stairs—and be careful when going downstairs! They can also use their hands more efficiently, even opening drawers and low cabinets. Adults should be especially aware of safety at this stage, as babies are naturally very curious. It's not safe to leave a baby alone in a room at this age. It's during this time that you should baby-proof your home or regular environment. This includes installing safety gates over stairs, special childproof locks, and electrical outlet protectors to help make the home environment safer. A tip: get on all fours and see where your little one would reach to see potentially dangerous areas firsthand. Hearing skills have improved, so babies can recognize words like "yes" and "no." This is a time when they develop a strong attachment to family and loved ones, and may become uncomfortable around strangers.

First steps and words

As their first birthday approaches, they are able to stand and are ready to take their first steps. They can pull themselves up and practice walking, pushing a walker or holding an adult's hand. Their finger muscles are well developed, so babies can pick up small objects with their thumb and index finger. If given a thick pencil, they can scribble on paper. Babies begin to develop patterns in babbling and begin to include words and names.
