Game Thursday: Shining Treasure - Game of the Year 2018!

The little dragons have found a super treasure hidden in a cold cave: a column of ice filled with beautifully colored gemstones frozen inside. With the help of the red dragon and his blazing fire, you'll have to collect as many gemstones as possible... BE CAREFUL! You can only collect those that are lucky enough to win. At the end of the game, who will have managed to pick the best ones from the melted column? Today we're going to look at the game that won this year's highly important international award, Kinderspiel des Jahres (Game of the Year). Making the best decision each turn will allow you to take the best stones and add them up to achieve the highest result and win the game, but be careful: you'll have to pay close attention, because your opponents can make things difficult for you! 5 to 99 years 2 to 4 players 15 minutes

Preparations:
Assemble the cardboard dividers to create 9 spaces at the bottom of the box. You'll only need to do this the first time you open it, as everything can then be stored with the dividers assembled. Place the board on top of the base, covering the dividers. Place the small dragons in the corners, covering the small hole in each corner of the board (as if protecting the entrance to your cave). Place the ice token in the center of the board, and place the ice rings on top of it. 8 rings if there are 2 or 4 players, and 9 if there are 3. Fill the gap between the rings with the glitter stones and place the 5 colored tokens on the table where everyone can reach. If you have any glitter stones left over that didn't fit in the gap between the rings, store them in the box. It should look something like this:
How do you play?
The game is played in turns. The youngest player, or the one who last entered a cave, starts. That player must use the large red dragon to melt the ice rings with its flame and perform the three tasks required on their turn: choose colored tiles (stone tiles), extract an ice ring, and collect the gems. 1.- Choose stone chips:
  • If there are two players, each of you will take turns choosing and picking up two stone tokens, with your opponent starting first. The other stone token is left where it was.
  • If there are 3 or 4 players, the player to your left will start choosing and picking up a stone, and you will be the last. The last stone is left in the same place where it was.
Here comes the important part: to choose well, look at the stones overflowing from the ice column, and take the stone token of the color that has the most precious stones and that falls in this round. 2.- Remove a ring Taking into account these three rules, you must carefully remove the top ring from the column:
  1. You can use one or both hands. Whichever you prefer.
  2. You can touch the stones above with your fingers to make them fall, but you will never be able to pick them up.
  3. You can push any stones that remain above the edge towards the center of the ring.
Hint: Try to make sure that when you extract the ring, your opponents' stones do not fall, and make sure that yours do fall :-) or failing that, that your opponents' stones fall through the holes near the ice column, which are those in the red dragon's cave ;-) 3.- Collect precious stones Starting with you, collect any gems that have fallen onto the board that match the color of your stone token(s) (depending on the number of players) and store them in your cave. The other players can then collect theirs and take them to their caves. Any leftover gems can be dropped into the red dragon's cave. If you haven't been able to collect any, give the red dragon to the next player and pass the turn. How does the game end? Once the last ring is removed, any gems not on the ice token are collected, and the game ends. It's time for counting: Remove the board to access the caves, and count all the gems you've collected throughout the game. Whoever has the most wins! Did you enjoy this cool game?
