Indeed, in June 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety warning about lidocaine-based medications used to treat teething pain. It highlighted the limited or no benefit of using these medications, as they disappear from children's mouths in a matter of minutes.
Back in 2011, the same agency issued similar advisories about the use of benzocaine for children's gum pain, seriously warning about the potential for life-threatening conditions. You can read all the information about those warnings here .
It's clear that these gels aren't safe to use, nor are they recommended as a remedy for teething pain. So, what's the best way to help babies and their parents during this difficult time?
- Use a teether that meets all safety requirements. If necessary, put it in the refrigerator for a while to keep it cool, but make sure it's not frozen before giving it to your baby.
- Gently rub or massage your gums with your finger to try to relieve symptoms.
- Use fruits and vegetables (apples, carrots, etc.) for your baby to chew on. Use self-feeders to prevent swallowing large pieces.
