Since children's first writing instruments are usually crayons, they should be made in a way that encourages them to use their thumb, index finger, and middle finger. This is what makes Crayon Rocks a wonderful tool for developing fine motor skills. Their special shape prevents children from easily grasping them in a closed fist or in any other way that would impede fine motor development and hinder their handwriting skills later on. The vast majority of crayons are made from petroleum paraffin wax, but Crayon Rocks are made from soy wax, grown and processed in the USA. It is combined with other plant-based waxes and non-toxic powdered mineral pigments to create the colors. A type of natural earth is used to shape them, creating easy-to-grip paints that go smoothly on paper and blend easily. In many ways, they are very similar to an oil pastel.
