Child Development Guide from 0 to 6 years. 6/6

From 4 to 6 years old

At this age, little ones have come a long way toward independence. Home is still a safe haven after all their new adventures. They're full of questions about everything and everyone.

Motor skills

They are adept at riding tricycles. They can turn, control their speed, and stop. By age five, they can ride a two-wheeled bicycle with training wheels or a balance bike. Their improved balance and coordination allow them to vary the speed, direction, and type of movement. They are able to throw, catch, bounce, and kick balls. Their fine hand dexterity is also well developed. They begin to trace simple writing patterns. By age six, they can draw basic shapes and write letters and numbers. They have also become much more independent in dressing, washing, brushing their teeth, and eating. They engage in group and solo play. They love making friends and playing in groups. They already understand the rules of sharing, taking turns, and caring for others' belongings. They can concentrate for longer periods of time and are ready for more complex toys, such as puzzles, bead strings, and drawing materials, paint, and dyes.

Intellectual and linguistic skills

Their expressive language comprehension skills have become much more comprehensive. They are eager to learn the meaning of new words, write their name, and learn where they live. They can write numbers from 1 to 10 and verbally count from 1 to 30. They can separate shapes, colors, and sizes into categories. They have a better understanding of concepts such as the order of time, times, and dates.
