Developmental Guide for Boys and Girls from 12 to 24 Months

Between one and one and a half years old, children begin to grow out of toddlerhood and into toddlerhood. They have learned many new skills and have a high energy level. As an adult, one of your key roles is to help little ones enjoy their newfound independence while keeping in mind their need for physical and emotional safety.

Exploration and discovery

After his first birthday, the baby has undergone a physical transformation. He can now move much faster and loves to explore his surroundings. However, he still lacks the intellectual capacity to think about the future and has little memory of the recent past. The safety of the home and play environment should be constantly monitored. Young children will have fun socializing with their peers, trying new foods, and discovering new play areas.

More communication

During this age, children absorb and enrich their language skills at a dizzying pace. Although some children may not verbalize as quickly as others, they understand what adults say. At one and a half years old, they can fluently use a dozen known words, but by the time they are two years old, they will know at least two hundred words. The first attempts at short sentences usually appear in this age range, between 18 and 24 months. Young children love to use gestures to convey their ideas and needs, and it's also very common (and fun) for them to invent their own words for certain things.

Imitation

Young children are very observant and learn by watching and imitating. They derive great satisfaction from doing the same things as mom or dad in everyday activities. Imitation play continues throughout childhood as a creative and imaginative form of play. Naturally egocentric At two years old, children tend to be self-centered and are often overconfident in themselves and their abilities. They are not very willing to get along in peer groups or share with others. Their ability to think about the feelings and needs of others is a quality that develops gradually throughout childhood. Adults can help by modeling cooperative behavior and creating situations in which sharing is a positive option. This is a time when children can begin to participate in personal care and hygiene activities, such as washing their hands, brushing their teeth, and learning to help with dressing. At this age, it's important to teach them how to say "please" and "thank you," and to praise and make a big fuss when they do.
